(BALTIMORE, MD, 2/11/19) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today welcomed a proclamation issued by Hagerstown, Md., Mayor Bob Bruchey affirming that city’s commitment to supporting and strengthening its ties with American Muslims.

The proclamation reads in part:

“The Mayor and Council of Hagerstown, Maryland are firmly committed to strengthening the relationship with the Muslim community of Hagerstown, and Hagerstown stands for justice and harmony and building bridges for the betterment of our city and community.”

“The Islamic Society of Western Maryland community appreciates Mayor Bruchey‘s proclamation and continued solidarity with our Community,” said Dr. Kalim Ahmed, who is the president of that mosque in Hagerstown. “We hope this gesture will help promote religious tolerance and lead to a more peaceful society for all.”

“In our nation’s divisive political climate, Mayor Bruchey’s gesture is a shining example of how elected officials can leverage their platforms to reaffirm their commitment to promoting inclusivity and diversity,” said CAIR Director of Maryland Outreach Zainab Chaudry.

“On behalf of the Islamic Society of Western Maryland, we appreciate mayor Bob Bruchey‘s proclamation recognizing Muslims in Hagerstown and his continued support and solidarity with our community,” said Dr. Kalim Ahmed, president of the Islamic Society of Western Maryland in Hagerstown. “We hope his effort and understanding will help promote religious tolerance and lead to a more peaceful society for all.”

Last summer, CAIR similarly welcomed a Senate resolution recognizing American Muslims’ rights and contributions.
